Why an infectious diseases specialist for the diabetic foot?
Most serious diabetic foot problems involve infection at some stage — in the skin and soft tissues, in deeper spaces of the foot or in the bone (osteomyelitis). Recognising infection, judging how severe it is, taking the right samples and choosing antibiotic treatment that targets the organism, for the right length of time, are central to protecting the foot. This is the work of infectious diseases and clinical microbiology.
UK and international guidance (NICE NG19 and the IWGDF/IDSA 2023 guideline) recommend that people with active diabetic foot problems are managed by a multidisciplinary team. An infectious diseases specialist works within that team alongside diabetes physicians, vascular and orthopaedic surgeons, podiatrists and wound care nurses.
